Difficult gauging conditions
In offshore applications the tank atmoshpere are affected by condensation, cargo vapour, and in some cases high temperatures. Furthermore the tanks are deep and loading and discharging are often subject to rough sea. Crude oil is sticky and contains wax, which means that gauges in contact with the cargo do not work satisfactory in this kind of application. In these conditions a radar gauge is the only type of gauge that will provide a reliable and accurate measurement.
Antenna size decisive for reliability
A large antenna diameter improves the sensitivity and produces a narrow radar beam. By doubling the antenna diameter the sensitivity is improved by 16 times. Sensitivity means the radar gauge’s ability to produce a reliable and accurate measurement, even when the returned signal is weak. Crude oil has a low dielectric coefficient and is therefore one of the most difficult cargoes to detect.
Flexible gauge with three different functions in one single unit
Rosemount TankRadar STaR offers an integrated solution for Level measuring, High Level Alarm and Overfill Alarm in one single unit. If there is no need for two independent alarm channels the second or/and third channel can be used as a back-up channel for level measurement thus getting full redundancy of the level measuring data.
