Rosemount TankRadar STaR for Crude Oil Carriers
Saab Marine Electronics introduced the radar measuring principle for tankers back in the 1970s and we started off in one of the most difficult applications – those in the tanks of Cruide Oil Carriers. The radar method quickly became a success as it offers a non-contact measuring, not affected by the harsh atmosphere in these tanks.

Our antenna solution for these tankers is the large-diameter, high sensitivity parabolic antenna. The parabolic antenna is designed to obtain a narrow beam. A narrow beam is necessary to detect the crude oil surface in the tank and to return back as much power as possible. Crude oil has a low dielectric coefficient and is one of the most difficult cargoes to detect. In order to be able to send and receive as much power as possible, the sensitivity of the gauge is of high importance. But the high sensitivity of the antenna does not mean that it is sensitive to deposits. On the contrary, thanks to the design deposits will not affect the antenna. Neither is condensation a problem since the antenna is placed inside the tank, allowing the antenna to adopt the same temperature as the tank atmosphere.

Fewer cables on deck
In Rosemount TankRadar STaR it is possible to multiplex the temperature signals from the cargo temperature system and transfer the information to the heating system of the ship. It is not necessary to have extra cables from the gauge to the main cabinet of the Rosemount TankRadar STaR system, which means fewer cables on deck.

Cargo Control System
Rosemount TankRadar Cargo Control System, provides complete integration of monitoring and control functions, such as pump speed control, valve control and power pack control. It is also possible to implement monitoring of other equipment onboard. It gives the operator immediate response on any action taken, and all measured data are instantly displayed. The system can handle discharging and loading of many tanks at the same time.
